Direct compensation Payments made to employees to include base salary. Direct pay includes exempt (employees who are exempt from overtime wage laws) and nonexempt (hourly paid) workers, and may be tied to minimum wage laws and other regulated components of direct pay programs.

Indirect compensation All other rewards not associated with direct pay, including incentives, inducements, time-off benefits such as sick time or holiday pay, and pension plan payments.
